Scientific name: Thraupis palmarum (Wied, 1821) Common name: Palm Tanager French name: Tangara des palmiers Order: Passeriformes Family: Thraupidae Size: Size: 16 cm; Weight: 36 g. Habitat: Forests, woodland edges, open areas. Food: Mainly small fruits. The Palm Tanager can also feed on nectar and insects. It often feeds perched rather high in trees and it is frequently observed hanging upside down under large palm tree leaves. Nesting: The nest is a large cup built with grass, leaf strips and palm fibres. It is located rather high in a tree. There can be several broods per year with two eggs and sometimes three. Migration: Sedentary. Geographic area: South part of Central America and South America, from Nicaragua to south Bolivia, south Brazil and Paraguay. |
Palm Tanagers are a dull olive green or grey colour. The flight feathers are blackish. The rather long tail is blackish and bordered with green. The underside of the wings shows a yellow bar which is visible in flight. Females are a slightly duller colour than males. |
