Scientific name: Thraupis episcopus (Linnaeus, 1766) Common name: Blue-grey Tanager French name: Tangara évêque, Tangara bleu. Order: Passeriformes Family: Thraupidae Size: Size: 16 to 18 cm; Weight: 27 to 45 g. Habitat: Open woodlands, cultivated areas, gardens. Food: Mainly fruits. The Blue-grey Tanager can also feed on nectar and insects. Nesting: The nest is a rather deep cup located high on fork in a tree or in a crevice in a wall. There are one to three eggs per brood. Migration: Sedentary. Geographic area: Central America and South America, from Mexico to north-east Bolivia and north Brazil. It is missing in the extreme south of the Amazonian Basin. It has been introduced to Lima in Peru. |
Adult Blue-grey Tanagers have pale blue head and under parts. The upper parts are a darker blue colour. There is a shoulder patch with a different colour, dark blue or white. The bill is short and thick. Both sexes are similar. Juveniles are duller. There is about fifteen subspecies depending on the hue of the blue colour and on the colour of the shoulder patch. |

Here is another bird photographed from my hammock during my short stay at Saül. We should ask the owner to let some shrubs grow closer to the hut so that we can shoot less distant pictures. It seems to me that the shoulder patch is white here. |
