Scientific name: Streptopelia decaocto (Frivaldszky, 1838) Common name: Collared Dove Other names: Eurasian Collared Dove French name: Tourterelle turque Order: Columbiformes Family: Columbidae Size: 31 to 33cm, 150 to 225 g Habitat: Cultivated fields, parks and gardens, including in big cities. Food: The Collared Dove mainly eats grains and seeds, it can also sometimes feed on insects and buds. Nesting: The nest is made up of a rough assembly of sticks on a branch of a tree (sometimes on the edge of a roof or on a window ledge ...). There are up to 4 broods per year (2 eggs) between April and September. Migration: Sedentary Geographic area: The original range, in India and in all warm regions from south-eastern Europe to Japan, extended to all Europe during the last 30 years. It was also introduced to North America. |
The Collared Dove is a uniform buff grey bird with a small black collar. The tip of the tail's feathers is a white colour. It can join winter flocks of about thirty birds. It is not shy and usually lives in the direct neighbourhood of human activity. You can see it in cereal fields and near grain storage silo. Its typical three-note song is easy to recognize. |

A couple of Collared Doves is used to nesting in my garden. They regularly come around the feeding plate. |

The Collared Doves' nest is really very rudimentary. However I guess it is enough to prevent eggs or chicks from falling down. |
