Scientific name: Rivula sericealis (Scopoli, 1763) Common name: Straw Dot French name: Soyeuse Order: Lepidoptera Suborder: Heterocera Family: Noctuidae Subfamily: Rivulinae Wingspan: 18-25 mm. Biotope: Woodland edges, damp meadows. Geographic area: Europe, north to Finland and et to western Russia. Very common in the southern part of its range, scarcer in the northern part. Flight time: May to October. Number of generations : 2 or 3. Caterpillar: Green with sparse long brown hairs. Host plant: Several Graminae, Sedges or Nettles. |
The Straw Dot has pale brown coloured forewings. Each forewing shows a central dark brown or bluish purple marking with two black spots. The margin is a darker brown colour and bears a row of tiny pale dots. The hind wings are a whitish grey colour with dark veining. The Straw Dot flies at dusk and during the night. It is attracted to light. It over winters as a young larva. |
