Scientific name: Pyrrhosoma nymphula (Sulzer, 1767) Common name: Large Red Damselfly French name: Petite nymphe au corps de feu Order: Odonata Suborder: Zygoptera Family: Coenagrionidae Wingspan: 45 mm. Biotope: Various habitats with a preference for brooklets and small ponds. The Large Red Damselfly is able to persist when its habitat becomes very dry. Geographic area: All Europe except extreme North. Flight time: April to August. |
The Large Red Damselfly has a dark red body thinly circled with black colour. There are larger black marks on the upper surface of the last segments of the abdomen. Some females are totally black on the upper side of the abdomen (melanotum form). The eyes are reddish. The thorax bears a black horizontal stripe. The legs are black. This is one of the first damselflies on the fly in spring. |

The straighten finger method works well and with several damselfly species. You just need to hold your finger straighten immobile in a place, usually near water, where you can find many of these small Zygopterae. |
