Scientific name: Pseudoips prasinana (Linnaeus, 1758) Common name: Green Silver-lines French name: Halias du hêtre Order: Lepidoptera Suborder: Heterocera Family: Nolidae Subfamily: Chloephorinae Wingspan: 30-35 mm. Biotope: Deciduous forests, mainly with Beeches and Oaks. Geographic area: Whole Eurasia. Flight time: May to July, August. Number of generations : 1 or 2. Caterpillar: Light green, hairless, with pale yellow small dots and two thin pale yellow longitudinal lines. There is also a yellow cross stripe at the back of the head and a small red streak on the last segment. Host plant: Various deciduous trees like European Beeches (Fagus sylvatica), Oaks (Quercus), Birches (Betula) and Sweet Chestnuts (Castanea sativa.) |
The Green Silver-lines has green fore wings with two or three more or less sharp white cross stripes. The wings are bordered with pinkish orange. Moths of the second generation show more contrasted colours. The hind wings are yellowish on males and white on females. The legs are pink. |

Here is an uncommon position for a moth found on the litter in the forest. Is this a sign of a close end of life? I have delicately put this moth on its legs and I have seen that it was still well alive. The rather white hind wings may indicate one female. |
