Scientific name: Phyllobius betulinus (Bechstein & Scharfenberg, 1805) Common name: French name: Charançon du bouleau Order: Coleoptera Family: Curculionidae Wingspan : 4.5 to 5.5 mm. Biotope: On Alders, Birches and Hazels among others. Geographic area: Europe east to Russia. Observation period : April to September. |
You can distinguish weevils of the Phyllobius genus compared to weevils of the Polydrusus genus from the shape of the scrobe (line where the antenna is inserted). It is rather straight, short and hardly visible on Phyllobius while it is curved and extends as far as below the eyes on Polydrusus. Phyllobius betulinus has a green body with strong bristly golden yellow hairs. The green colour may fade with age. The elytra are slightly divergent at the back. The rostrum is narrower than the head. The femurs are toothed. |

This weevil entered my workshop, the door of which remained open and is in the immediate vicinity of a Birch. I had to use the flash and extension tubes because of the small size of this specimen and because of the localisation of the observation. The green colour is a bit changed by the reflections. The scrobe, straight in shape and not curving downwards, clearly indicates a member of the Phyllobius genus. The general shape, the strong bristly hairiness and the place of observation point towards the Phyllobius betulinus species. You cannot see the teeth on the femurs. I will try to multiply the photos if a new opportunity arises. |
