Scientific name: Pherbellia cinerella (Fallén, 1820) Common name: French name: Order: Diptera Family: Sciomyzidae Wingspan : 4-5 mm. Biotope: Various habitats with a preference for dry and warm places, dunes, calcareous meadows. It is also observed in damp places but in smaller numbers. Geographic area: Palaearctic region. Observation period : All year round, with up to 7 broods per year. It over winters at the adult state. |
Pherbellia cinerella is the most common species of the Sciomyzidae family in the Palaearctic region. It shows a dark brown to shiny black median stripe on the upper side of the head between two broad orange bands. This black stripe extends up to the forehead to a small white spot located between the two black antennae. The fore wings are darkened on the costal edge and on the cross veins. The first pair of legs is very dark to black. The other pairs of legs are a more orange and lighter colour. The thorax is grey with dark longitudinal stripes. Larvae of this species are predators of many terrestrial and aquatic snails. |

You can see here the long black stripe on the upper side of the head between two broad orange bands and the first pair of legs which is much darker than the two other pairs. |
