Peribalus strictus (Fabricius, 1803)

Scientific name: Peribalus strictus (Fabricius, 1803)
Common name:
Other names: Other scientific name: Holcostethus strictus. Some naturalists consider Holcostethus as a separate genus from Peribalus based on morphological differences on the jugae and the clypeus.
French name:
Order: Heteroptera
Family: Pentatomidae
Wingspan : 10-12 mm.
Biotope: On plants, shrubs and high grasses, in rather damp environments. You can find this shieldbug in clearings next to small water points.
Geographic area: Europe and Asia.
Observation period : April to October.

Peribalus strictus is a general brownish green colour, punctuated with dark, paler in spring and in summer.
The margin of the pronotum is pale yellow. It is interrupted by a small black stripe where the pronotum is the widest.
The tip of the scutellum is pale yellow. The connexivum is pale yellow and black.
The antennae are orange yellow, paler near the base and with black marks near the tip.
You can distinguish two subspecies which were considered as separate species a few years ago.
Peribalus strictus vernalis shows a black ring on articles IV and V of the antennae. The tip of the scutellum is not punctuated. The femora are covered with small black dots. This subspecies is widespread in France.
Peribalus strictus strictus only shows one black ring on article V of the antennae (pay attention, I have read that a few vernalis are missing the black rings described above). The tip of the scutellum is punctuated. The femora are hardly punctuated. In France, this subspecies has rather a Mediterranean range.

Peribalus strictus
This shieldbug, observed on the Buddleia, shows all the characteristics of the Peribalus strictus vernalis subspecies.
You can see the two black rings on articles IV and V of the antennae and the tip of the scutellum does not appear punctuated.

You can see the hind leg femur on this side view. It is very punctuated and this confirms Peribalus strictus vernalis.
