Scientific name: Oreina menthastri (Suffrian, 1851) Common name: Other names: Other scientific names: Chrysolina herbacea or Chrysolina menthastri. French name: Chrysomèle de la menthe Order: Coleoptera Family: Chrysomelidae Wingspan : 7 à 11 mm. Biotope: Damp areas, pond banks and river banks on Mentha and other Labiaceae plants. Geographic area: Europe, Asia Minor, central Asia east to the Pamir and Altai mountains. Observation period : May to September |
Oreina menthastri is one of the most shiny Leaf Beetles. It is a green metallic colour. The elytra and the edges of the pronotum are strongly and irregularly punctuated. There is a possible confusion with the Leaf Beetles of the Cryptocepalus genus which show the same metallic green colour. However these last ones have a cylindrical shape. In the meantime Oreina menthastri shows a clear separation between the abdomen, the thorax and the head. |

I am still having problems with the use of the flash and this is even worse with shiny subjects. I need to start to build and evaluate some kind of diffuser to improve my pictures. |

Many Horse Mint plants (Mentha sylvestris) grow on the banks of this pond. That's why I can rather easily observe Oreina menthastri over there. |
