Ophisma despagnesi has a russet brown thorax and a dark grey abdomen marked with thin pale rings. The base of the fore wings is russet brown and delimited by a thin white line. The remaining part of the fore wings is blackish grey except a large pinkish yellow patch bordering the margin and delimited by a curved line starting from the anal angle and turning close to the costal edge to reach the margin. The blackish grey area is marked with a hardly visible zigzag pattern and with two small black dots outlined with pink. These dots are at the usual location of the reniform spot. The pinkish yellow area is marked with a diffuse black spot. The hind wings are greyish with a paler margin. They show two pale wavy lines, starting from the anal angle and delimiting a darker area close to their start. There is a very similar species, Parachaea macaria. I have not found any information telling how to choose between Ophisma despagnesi and Parachaea macaria with only a picture. |

I have shot this picture at Roura, at Camps Patawa, during a light trap night session. For information I have found a web site displaying a photo of a specimen of each species on a different background and with different light conditions. With a closer look at the wings of the first moth I have detected four small defects of lacking scales and tears certainly because of age. But what a surprise when I found exactly the same defects on the other picture though it was listed as the other species! |
