Scientific name: Omocestus rufipes (Zetterstedt, 1821) Common name: Woodland Grasshopper Other names: Other scientific name: Omocestus ventralis. French name: Criquet noir-ébène Order: Orthoptera Family: Acrididae Wingspan : 12 to 17 mm for males, 18 to 20 mm for females. Biotope: Clearing, woodland rides, heath lands. It prefers dry habitats with dense grasses. Geographic area: Europe and northern Asia. Observation period : Early April to November. There are two broods per year. |
The upper side of males is blackish brown. The underside of the thorax and of the beginning of the abdomen is greenish yellow and the abdomen tip is reddish. The mouth palps are black with a white tip. Females are dark brown with a green upper side. The song of the Woodland Grasshopper is very typical and may only be confused with the Common Green Grasshopper's one (Omocestus viridulus). |

I have observed this beautiful grasshopper on a woodland edge. You can see the whit tips of the mouth palps on this picture. |

This Woodland Grasshopper has performed some physical exercise before suddenly jumping away when I tried to approach to have a closer view. |
