Biotope: Woodland edges, parks and gardens. Geographic area: Europe east to eastern Russia, Asia Minor, Iran, Mongolia. Flight time: May-June. Number of generations : 1 Caterpillar: Dark reddish brown with a black head. It feeds on Roses, in buds and young shoots. Host plant: Dog Rose (Rosa canina) and other Roses (Rosa sp), but also Blackberry (Rubus fruticosus), Pear Trees (Pyrus), Apple Trees (Malus), Cherry Trees and Plum Trees (Prunus), etc. |
The head and the basal area of the wings are a very dark brown colour, almost black. The apex of the wings is rather dark too. The area in between is white with grey or brown scaling. The palps are orange and this fact can be used to tell Notocelia cynosbatella apart from similar species. |
