Scientific name: Nacerdes (Xanthochroa) carniolica (Gistel, 1834) Common name: French name: Order: Coleoptera Family: Oedemeridae Wingspan : 11-14 mm. Biotope: Low level vegetation in forests, on flowers during night. Larvae grow in dead wood. Geographic area: Western Europe, Southern Europe and Central Europe east to Turkey. Observation period : July to September. |
Oedemeridae of the Nacerdes genus only show one spine at the apex of the fore tibiae and four visible ribs on the elytra, the outer one very close to the edge. The body is elongated and cylindrical. The long and thin antennae reach the middle of the elytra. The pronotum is clearly narrower than the elytra and it tapers at the rear. Body, legs, head and antennae are an orange brown colour. The elytra and the lateral sides of the pronotum are black. This description is for the nominal sub-species Nacerdes carniolica carniolica. You can find another sub-species in the south-western regions of France, Nacerdes carniolica atlantica. It differs by the yellowish brown colour of the elytra with a more or less broad marginal black border and by a slightly larger size, up to 17 mm. These beetles have essentially a nocturnal activity. |

Instead of dense low level vegetation in the forest this Nacerdes chose the wall of my house for its diurnal rest. All the useful criteria to tell this species apart are visible on this picture: spine at the apex of the fore tibia, ribs on the elytra (better visible on the non-reduced picture), black markings on the lateral sides of the pronotum. |
