Scientific name: Myiopsitta monachus (Boddaert, 1783) Common name: Monk Parakeet Other names: Quaker Parrot French name: Conure veuve, Perruche veuve, Perruche moine. Order: Psittaciformes Family: Psittacidae Size: Body size: 28 to 30 cm; weight: 90 to 140 g; Wingspan: 43 to 48 cm. Habitat: Dry plains with sparse trees, river banks with trees, savannas. Monk Parakeets are also adapted to urban areas with parks and rows of trees. Food: Fruits, wild seeds and roots. Monk Parakeets are considered as pests in cultivated areas where they are found in large numbers. Nesting: Nests can be huge size communal nests. They are built with sticks and twigs and have several entrances and chambers (one entrance and one chamber for each pair). There are generally 5 to 7 eggs per clutch. Migration: Sedentary, some moves are possible in case of lack of food. Geographic area: North of Argentina and Bolivia, south of Brazil. Birds escaped from captivity have settled in the United States, Puerto Rico, Europe, Japan and Australia among other places, especially in urban areas. |
Monk Parakeets have grey coloured head, throat and chest. The remaining part of the plumage is a light green colour with blue colour on the external part of the wings. The legs are grey and the bill is horn coloured. |
