Scientific name: Myathropa florea (Linnaeus, 1758) Common name: Dead Head Fly French name: Syrphe tête de mort, Eristale des fleurs. Order: Diptera Family: Syrphidae Wingspan : 10-14 mm. Biotope: This hoverfly mainly lives in woodlands. Larvae called rat-tailed maggot grow in stagnant water found in old tree holes. Imagos are used to visiting all sorts of flowers. Geographic area: All Europe, North Africa. Observation period : May to September, with a peak in July-August. |
The Dead Head Fly is a wasp-like hoverfly because of the bold yellow and black markings on its abdomen. It differs from other hoverflies by the marks on the thorax. These marks sometimes look like a dead head. |

For macro pictures, I set the lenses in manual focus, I adjust a predefined focus distance, I slowly approach the subject and I shoot the picture as soon as the wanted part appears sharp in the viewfinder. |
