Scientific name: Melospiza melodia (Wilson, 1810) Common name: Song Sparrow French name: Bruant chanteur Order: Passeriformes Family: Passerellidae Size: Body size: 15 to 17 cm; Weight: 12 to 53 g; Wingspan: 18 to 24 cm. Habitat: Open areas with bushes, shrubs, hedges, groves, etc. Food: Seeds and sometimes insects and berries collected on the ground. Nesting: The nest is usually located on the ground or at very low height in a bush or a tree. There are 2 to 3 clutches per year of 3 to 5 eggs between February and August. Migration: Partially migratory. The northernmost populations move southwards in winter. Geographic area: North America. There are 36 subspecies. |
The Song Sparrow has a brown plumage with darker streaks except the belly which is light coloured with dark streaks and a brown patch on the breast. The top of the head is dark brown divided by a thin pale line. There is a broad greyish or whitish supercilium. The tail is rather long. |

This bird was very discreet and I could not take a close-up shot. However, I think that the criteria required to identify the Song Sparrow are visible, especially the large brown patch on the chest. |
