Scientific name: Melanocoryphus albomaculatus (Goeze, 1778) Common name: French name: Melanocoryphus albomaculatus Order: Heteroptera Family: Lygaeidae Wingspan : 7 à 9,5 mm Biotope: Dry and hot places: Fallow lands, parks, gardens, etc. Geographic area: Mediterranean Basin, Central Asia. This species becomes very rare at latitude higher than Paris. Observation period : May to July. The new generation starts to emerge late August and will winter under the litter. |
It is very easy to tell the Melanocoryphus albomaculatus seed bug species apart. It shows a white spot in the centre of the membranous wings. The apex of the membranous wings is black, without any white patch. There is a black spot on each corium and the head is completely black. The pronotum shows two black hook-shaped patches which get closer at the front. Melanocoryphus albomaculatus generally feeds on seeds fallen on the ground. |

This bug was observed on the banks of the Doubs river. Low growing shrubs alternating with sunny gravel beds make a favourable habitat for this xerothermophilous species. |

All my observations made to date are from the first half of the year and therefore must be of overwintered individuals. |
