Common name:
French name: Melanocoryphus albomaculatus
Order: Heteroptera
Family: Lygaeidae
Wingspan : 7 à 9,5 mm

Observation period : May to July. The new generation starts to emerge late August and will winter under the litter.

It is very easy to tell the Melanocoryphus albomaculatus seed bug species apart.
It shows a white spot in the centre of the membranous wings. The apex of the membranous wings is black, without any white patch. There is a black spot on each corium and the head is completely black.
The pronotum shows two black hook-shaped patches which get closer at the front.
Melanocoryphus albomaculatus generally feeds on seeds fallen on the ground.

This bug was observed on the banks of the Doubs river.
Low growing shrubs alternating with sunny gravel beds make a favourable habitat for this xerothermophilous species.

I always have a look at the wall as soon as I walk through the door to go out into the fresh air. It's incredible how many different species you can see there.

All my observations made to date are from the first half of the year and therefore must be of overwintered individuals.
