Scientific name: Medetera sp. (Fischer von Waldheim, 1819) Common name: French name: Order: Diptera Family: Dolichopodidae Wingspan : 1.2 to 4.4 mm. Biotope: On trunks and walls among others. Geographic area: Observation period : |
Diptera of the Medetera genus are easily recognized by their general look. The body is held vertically, slightly upper forward. The legs are long. The voluminous proboscis gives a distinctly elongated head downwards. The arista is long, there are long bristles on the top of the head. The colour varies from dark metallic green to black with often grey or brown pruinosity. The R4+5 vein of the wings is curved and approaches the M vein towards the margin. 24 species of the genus are listed as present in Europe including about ten in France. The larvae usually feed on bark beetle larvae. Adults feed on various arthropods. |

I have found flies of the Medetera genus classified into different groups but I have not found the key to perform this classification. |
