Wingspan: 16 to 19 mm. The second brood is often significantly smaller in size.
Biotope: Often near farms and buildings where dry plants are stored, dry forests.
Geographic area: Southern Europe (north to the Netherlands), Central Europe, Turkey, Iran, Caucasus, Kazakhstan, Tajikistan, North Africa. A few isolated populations may have been introduced here and there by transport of dry plants.
Flight time: Late April to mid-July then late July to mid-September.

Caterpillar: Short, brownish or yellowish with a small yellowish or reddish head and broad black markings on the back and sides.
Host plant: Dry and withered plants, hay, plant waste, litter.

The Rusty Wave has fairly broad forewings with a very rounded apex.
The wings are yellowish grey in colour and marked with brown.
The medial and antemedian bands merge into a broad irregular band.
The post-median band is formed by an alignment of small dots.
The terminal area is marked with irregular light yellowish spots that touch each other.
The fringe is dotted with small brown dots.

Rusty Wave (Idaea inquinata)
The old farm where I observed this Rusty Wave has not been farmed for several decades but there is still a stock of old hay and straw.
