Scientific name: Icterus nigrogularis (Hahn, 1816) Common name: Yellow Oriole French name: Oriole jaune Order: Passeriformes Family: Icteridae Size: Body size: 20 cm; Weight: 38 g. Habitat: Open woodlands, woodland edges, parks and gardens. Food: Large insects, nectar and some fruits. Nesting: The nest is a hanging basket of about 40 cm in length. There are generally 2 or 3 eggs per clutch. Migration: Sedentary. Geographic area: Colombia, Venezuela, Guyana, Suriname, French Guiana, extreme north of Brazil and islands in the vicinity of these countries. |
As indicated by its common name, the Yellow Oriole's plumage is mainly yellow. Males show a black mask ahead of the eyes and a black stripe running down on the throat. The tail is black. The wings are black with a thin white bar and some white feather tips. Females are similar to males but are a duller colour. Juveniles have a greenish upper side and they are missing the black marks on the head and on the throat. |

I have shot this picture at Awala Yalimapo, les Hattes, while walking on a footpath going southwards from the D22 road. I think that this one is a male. You cannot see the black stripe on the throat but you can see the black eye mask. |

I have observed several Yellow Orioles at this place. I think that this one is an immature as it is missing the black marks on the head and on the throat. |

All my observations of Yellow Orioles have been done not far from this nest located on the side of the footpath. Having observed many immature birds makes me think that the brood is now able to fly. |
