Scientific name: Hypena proboscidalis (Linnaeus, 1758) Common name: Snout French name: Noctuelle à museau Order: Lepidoptera Suborder: Heterocera Family: Erebidae Subfamily: Hypeninae Wingspan: 25-38 mm. Biotope: Damp habitats. Stream banks, hedgerows, wasteland and other places where Nettles grow. Geographic area: Eurasia, north to the Polar Circle. Flight time: April to October. Number of generations : 2 to 3. Caterpillar: Pale green, rather thin with a few sparse warts with bristles. This caterpillar has only three pairs of abdominal prolegs and one pair of anal prolegs. The body segments are separated by thin yellow stripes. There is a longitudinal white stripe on the side of the body near the spiracles and two greenish white dorsal stripes. The head is green with small black spots. Host plant: Nettles (Urtica sp.), Common Hop (Humulus lupulus), Stachys sp., Bishop's Weed (Aegopodium podagraria). |
The Snout's common name comes from its long and up-curved labial palps. The apex of the fore wings is slightly hooked. The fore wings are variable in colour from brown to greyish. They are crossed by dark brown lines. The antemedian line shows a sharp angle. The postmedian line is almost straight. There may be some darker areas close to the margin. The hind wings are greyish with a darker fringe. The Snout over winters as a caterpillar. |
