Scientific name: Hipparchia statilinus (Hufnagel, 1766) Common name: Tree Grayling French name: Faune, Arachné, Coronis. Order: Lepidoptera Suborder: Rhopalocera Family: Nymphalidae Subfamily: Satyrinae Wingspan: 44-46 mm. Biotope: Open woodlands, dry meadows and heathlands, with a preference for hot and dry places. Geographic area: South-western Europe, central Europe. North Africa. Flight time: June to October. Number of generations : 1 Caterpillar: Pale beige with dark and pale longitudinal lines and a pointed and bifid tail. Host plant: Various grasses. |
The upper side of the Tree Grayling's wings is dark greyish brown. The upper side of the fore wings shows two black ocelli, without central pupil, and two white spots in between. The upper side of the hind wing shows a very small black ocellus. The under side of the fore wing shows two large white-pupiled black ocelli, circled with yellow. The under side of the hind wing is dark grey on the basal area. Some wavy black lines are followed by a slightly paler postdiscal stripe. The submarginal area is a darker brown colour with the small black ocellus. The hind wing has a scallop edge. |

I have observed many butterflies of the Hipparchia genus during this hiking as I have also observed the Rock Grayling and the Striped Grayling. |
