Butterflies of the Hermeuptychia genus are small-sized Satyrinae showing a uniform dark brown upper side with two dark marginal lines. The underside of the wings bears two dark thin median stripes and one row of submarginal eyespots preceding three dark marginal lines. There are 13 species in this genus. They are rather difficult to differentiate. Here are some criteria that I have found mentioned for the underside of Hermeuptychia hermes' wings. The first median line under the hind wing, starting from the base, is clearly curved. The second one is straighter. The eyespots are all about the same size. The very dark eyespots are not larger than the paler ones or just hardly slightly larger. The first marginal line, the one closer to the eyespots, is clearly zigzag-shaped. As one example, on Hermeuptychia sosybius, the darker eyespots are clearly larger than the paler ones and the first marginal line is less zigzag-shaped. |

I have shot this picture at Sinnamary, next to the Yiyi marshes, on the footpath going from the Nature House to the bird watching huts. All the criteria mentioned for Hermeuptychia hermes are visible here. However I have still a doubt because I lack information about any possible confusion with similar species. |

I have shot this picture at Roura, at the camps Patawa. I am not an expert, so the identification of the species is to be considered as a tentative. |
