Wingspan : 3-4 mm.
Biotope: Meadows and cereal fields. The eggs are laid on the crowns or stems of young plants and the larvae dig galleries which are fatal to the concerned plants. The Cereal Fly is a pest of corn fields.
Geographic area: Palaearctic and Holarctic regions.
Observation period : All year round with a peak in summer.

The Cereal Fly has a thin and elongated body. The head and thorax are variable in colour from reddish orange to black. The eyes are red and the legs are reddish. The abdomen is shiny black.
The wings bear three distinctive dark spots.

The dark spot on the wings, which are the key to identify this species, are not perfectly visible on this picture. I will try to get a better view next time.
I think that the white spot on the abdomen is only a reflection of the flash light.
