Scientific name: Fringilla coelebs (Linnaeus, 1758)
Common name: Chaffinch
French name: Pinson des arbres
Order: Passeriformes
Family: Fringillidae
Size: 15 to 16 cm, 19 to 24g.
Habitat: Clear forest and open woodlands, parks and gardens.
Food: Seeds on the ground and caterpillars during the breeding season.
Nesting: The nest, made up of moss, twigs, spider webs and barks, is built in a tree fork. There is a first brood in March-April and a second one in June-July (about 5 eggs per brood).
Migration: Sedentary, northern birds move southwards.
Geographic area: All Europe, plus North Africa, Asia Minor and west to Siberia.

Both sexes are very different. Males and females have large double white wing bars and white marks on the edge of the tail.
Males are brighter coloured. The face and the breast are reddish, the cap and the back are black.
The female's plumage is more greenish.

Chaffinches are beautiful birds by their songs and their bright colours.
While populations of Sparrows are decreasing, I have the impression that populations of Chaffinches are increasing.

This Chaffinch must be used to coming and feeding on breadcrumbs near this picnic area. That's why it is not very shy and let us come very close.
