Scientific name: Euthystira brachyptera (Ocskay, 1826) Common name: Small Gold Grasshopper French name: Criquet des genévriers Order: Orthoptera Family: Acrididae Wingspan : 13 to 17 mm for males, 18 to 26 mm for females. Biotope: Mountain meadows with high grasses, clearings, woodland edges, down in plains on the northern part of the range. Geographic area: Europe and Asia, from the Pyrenees to western Siberia, north to the Netherlands and to Poland. Observation period : Late April to November with a peak in July-August. |
Male and female Small Gold Grasshoppers are a pale green colour with some golden tint. Males' wings reach the middle of the abdomen. Those of females a very short and often pink or purple coloured. There is a possible confusion with the brachypterous form (meaning with short wings) of Chrysochraon dispar when its colour is green yellow. Male Chrysochraon dispar have black knees while they are paler Small Gold Grasshopper. The wings of female Chrysochraon dispar are slightly longer and with a pointed apex. |
