Scientific name: Eurygaster testudinaria (Geoffroy, 1785) Common name: Tortoise Bug French name: Punaise tortue brune Order: Heteroptera Family: Scutelleridae Wingspan : 9-11 mm. Biotope: Damp meadows and other open or semi-shady habitats, on Gramineae and other plants like umbellifers, Rushes, etc. Geographic area: Europe form the north of the Mediterranean Sea to southern Scandinavia, Asia east to northern China and Japan. Observation period : All year round. You can start to observe nymphs in May. They become adults in July-August. |
The Tortoise Bug is rather variable in colour. The edges of the pronotum are rather straight. The tylus is slightly lower than the juga. The lateral angles of the pronotum are rather well marked and protrude on each side beyond the corium edges. The well developed scutellum covers all the abdomen. It does not show any carina. The second article of the antennae is slightly longer than the third one. There is a possible confusion with Eurygaster maura and Eurygaster austriaca. Eurygaster austriaca shows a carina on the scutellum and the juga join at the front over the tylus. The lateral angles of the pronotum do not protrude beyond the corium on Eurygaster maura. They are also more rounded than on Eurygaster testudinaria. The second article of the antennae is twice longer than the third one. |

The tylus not covered by the juga, the lack of carina on the scutellum, the lateral angles of the pronotum and the length of the antennae's articles indicate Eurygaster testudinaria. |
