Red Cabbage Bug (Eurydema ornata (Linnaeus, 1758))

Scientific name: Eurydema ornata (Linnaeus, 1758)
Common name: Red Cabbage Bug
French name: Punaise ornée du chou, Punaise rouge du chou, Punaise décorée.
Order: Heteroptera
Family: Pentatomidae
Wingspan : 7-9 mm.
Biotope: On wild crucifers.
Geographic area: Southern Europe.
Observation period : All year round.

Bugs of the Eurydema genus are very coloured generally with red and black, but sometimes also with other colours.
The Red Cabbage Bug's colour may turn slightly to white in the south of France.
The patterns are variable and here is what I have found to tell similar species apart.
The Red Cabbage Bug (Eurydema ornata) shows a black spot on its exocorium (outer edge of the hard part of the wing) which is continued by a grey streak. The connexivum is marked with three pairs of rectangular black spots.
Eurydema dominula does not show any black spot on its exocorium.
Eurydema ventralis also shoes a black spot on its exocorium but it does not extend with a grey streak. The connexivum is marked with four pairs of rectangular black spots.
One other possibility is to examine the colour of the back, under the wings. It is red on Eurydema ventralis, it is black on Eurydema ornata. In the field, you can see this colour when the bug takes off.

The black spot on the exocorium extending with a streak and the three pairs of black spots on the connexivum confirm the Red Cabbage Bug species (Eurydema ornata).
