Erotylus giganteus (Linnaeus, 1758)

Wingspan : About 20-23 mm.
Biotope: Tropical forests, river banks, on rotten trunks or in the litter. These insects and their larvae feed on fungi which grow on rotting wood.
Geographic area: Suriname, French Guiana, Brazil.
Observation period : All year round.

As indicated by its scientific name, Erotylus giganteus is a large size Erotylidae.
It shows very convex shaped elytra with many red or yellowish-red spots on a shiny black background.
The head, the pronotum, the underside of the body and the legs are black..
The pronotum is flat with irregular depressions.
The tarsi have five articles but article 4 is very small and almost disappears inside article 3 which is wider.

Erotylus giganteus
I have observed this Erotylus giganteus while walking along the Roche-Bateau footpath next to the small village of Saül.
It is easy to detect with its bright colours and easy to photograph as it moves rather slowly.
