Scientific name: Eristalinus aenus (Scopoli, 1763) Common name: Common Lagoon Fly French name: Order: Diptera Family: Syrphidae Wingspan : 6-10 mm. Biotope: Proximity to ponds, lakes, slow-moving streams, irrigation canals, ditches. Geographic area: Europe, Africa, Southern part and Pacific coasts of Asia, North America, Australia, New Zealand. Observation period : April to October but the species winters as an adult and can therefore also be observed from the first warm days. |
The Eristalinus genus is easily recognized by the very large light brownish eyes speckled with dark. Eristalinus aenus has completely shiny black tergites 2 and 3. The males' eyes touch at the front. Females have separate eyes and only hairy on their upper third. There are 5 longitudinal lines not always very visible on the thorax. Eristalinus sepulchralis differs in males by the eyes that do not touch and in females by the short hair that covers the entire eye with a constant density. Rat-tailed larvae grow in water with decaying organic matter. |
