Epargyreus aspina is a rather dark brown skipper with a light coloured orange head contrasting with the two large black eyes. The fore wings bear some sparse pale orange spots. You can tell species of the Epargyreus genus apart with the layout of the markings on the under side of the hind wings. Epargyreus aspina shows a square white spot at mid-length of the inner edge of the hind wing. It is touching another smaller white patch towards the inside of the wing. I am wondering if the English common name "Spineless Silverdrop" does not come from the square shape of the median spot on the inner edge … More diffuse white patches form some kind of a line in the submarginal area. Marginal areas of the fore wings and hind wings are dusted with white. |

I have shot this picture on the peninsula of Cayenne while walking along the Montabo footpath. If I have listed the correct species and if what I have read is true, we are here at the southern limit of the range. |
