Scientific name: Endotricha flammealis (Denis & Schiffermüller, 1775) Common name: Rose-flounced Tabby French name: Flamme, Asopie flamme. Order: Lepidoptera Suborder: Heterocera Family: Pyralidae Subfamily: Pyralinae Wingspan: 18 to 23 mm. Biotope: Meadows, woodland edges, groves, bushes, hedges, scrub, heaths, parks and gardens. Geographic area: Europe, Turkey, Caucasus, Iran, Syria, Lebanon, Algeria, Tunisia. Flight time: Mid May to late October but mainly from late June to August. Number of generations : 1 Caterpillar: According to the few photos that I was able to find: Black head, yellowish green body in the early stages of development and black in the later stages (to be confirmed). Host plant: Numerous plants and shrubs at the beginning including the Greater Bird's-Foot-Trefoil (Lotus pedunculatus) then litter of dead leaves. The Rose-flounced Tabby overwinters as a caterpillar. |
The Rose-flounced Tabby's forewings are quite variable in colour, from orange-yellow to reddish or pinkish brown. You can see a small black discal spot and light cross lines bordered by dark which sometimes delimit a lighter middle area. The costal edge is dotted with dark brown and white. The fringe is white and forms a small notch near the apex. The resting position is characteristic with the head and front of the body raised while the rear of the wings lies on the support. |

The Rose-flounced Tabby is a moth with variable colours and some faint specimens can even appear uniform in colour. This is not the case with this one which has the characteristic pinkish brown colours and patterns. |

The identification of the species is also confirmed by the characteristic resting position with the front of the body raised on the front legs. |
