Size: Body size: 40 to 49 cm; Wingspan: 66 to 75 cm; Weight: 250 to 350 g
Habitat: Deciduous and coniferous forests with tall and widely spaced trees.
Food: Insects, larvae caught in trees and large ants captured on the ground. The diet can be supplemented with some fruits and seeds.
Nesting: The nest is a large cavity dug in the trunk of a dead tree. A new nest is dug each year.
Migration: Sedentary.
Geographic area: Southern half of Canada, United States south to northern California on the west coast and as far as Florida on the eastern half of the country.

The Pileated Woodpecker has black plumage with a bright red crest.
Eyebrows and throat are white. A white band starts from the top of the bill passing under the eyes. It forms an angle before reaching the nape to descend on the sides of the neck to the top of the flanks.
Males have a red moustache. It is black on females.
The bill is strong and black. The legs are dark grey.
