Deraeocoris ruber shows a shiny body and a very variable brown reddish colour which is sometimes very dark. The cuneus (at the tip of the elytra) is always red. The ring at the front of the pronotum, next to the head, is shiny. The antennae are made of 4 articles. The first one, and at least the base of the second are black. Deraeocoris ruber feeds on small insects, aphids and larvae like Croesus septentrionalis. Deraeocoris ruber over winters as an egg. There are about 10 species of the Deraeocoris genus in France. Here are some informations about the species for which there is a possible confusion with Deraeocoris ruber. Deraeocoris olivaceus is a slightly larger size and shows dark bands on the tibiae while Deraeocoris ruber has non-banded tibiae. Deraeocoris flavilinea has also banded tibiae. You can recognize this species with the whitish margins at the front and at the back of the pronotum and with the whitish edges on the scutellum. |

I have found this nymph of Red Spotted Plant Bug on a Nettle. I have used extension tubes to get a higher magnification. However I still have to make important progress on flash light diffusion. |
