Order: Lepidoptera Suborder: Heterocera Family: Geometridae Subfamily: Ennominae Wingspan: 29-35 mm for males and 24-26 mm for females. Biotope: Meadows between an altitude of 900 and 2000 m. Geographic area: Alps, Vosges, Jura and Massif Central in France, Italia, Switzerland and Austria. Flight time: June to August. Number of generations : 1 Caterpillar: Pale brown with dark brown longitudinal stripes. Host plant: Many low growing pants. |
Male Crocota tinctaria are an orange yellow colour. They have feathery antennae. Females are paler and slightly smaller. There is a possible confusion with Crocota pseudotinctaria, in the French Alps near the border with Switzerland. You can observe Crocota tinctaria during the day while it is gathering nectar on meadow flowers. |

I have observed this Crocota tinctaria in the mountain of Belledonne, France, at an altitude of 1700 metres. I have only found Crocota pseudotinctaria listed in Haute-Savoie in France. My species identification is only based on this because it is impossible to tell both species apart only on picture. |

I have observed several specimen of this moth while hiking in the French National Park named Parc de la Vanoise. I have found which species it is, only 3 years later. You must never give up. |

I must go back hiking in the Alps. I have made some progress in photography and I think that I am now able to get sharper pictures. |
