Scientific name: Corizus hyoscyami (Linnaeus, 1758) Common name: French name: Punaise de la jusquiame Order: Heteroptera Family: Rhopalidae Wingspan : 9 to 12 mm. Biotope: Heathlands, waste lands, dunes, clearings, with a preference for dry and sunny places. Geographic area: Europe, Asia, North Africa. Observation period : All year. It over winters at the adult stage, females lay eggs in spring and the next generation emerges between August and September. |
Corizus hyoscyami is a black and red shield bug you can recognize by the lack of white patch on the wing membrane, by the presence of a central red patch on the scutellum and by two heart-shaped black patches on the pronotum. It has also a dense pilosity and shows many veins on the wing membrane. Corizus hyoscyami feeds on toxic plants and its black and red colour warns the potential predators about its toxicity. There are two subspecies which differ by the colour of tergites 3 and 4. Tergites 3 and 4 are red on Corizus hyoscyami hyoscyami while they are black onCorizus hyoscyami nigridorsum you can find in the southern part of the range. |

It is easy to tell Corizus hyoscyami apart as this is the only black and red shield bug showing a red patch on the scutellum. |
