Cloeon sp. (Leach, 1815)

Scientific name: Cloeon sp. (Leach, 1815)
Common name:
French name:
Order: Ephemeroptera
Family: Baetidae
Wingspan : Body size of imagos (without the cerci) : 5 to 10 mm.
Biotope: The larvae grow in stagnant or slow running water.
Geographic area: Worldwide but missing in the Neotropical region.
Observation period :

Mayflies of the Baetidae family are small insect with a body of 5 to 10 mm extended at the rear by two cerci. The hind wings are missing or atrophied. The fore wings show short intercalar veins between the longitudinal veins. Males have elevated turbinate eyes.
The Cloeon and Procloeon genera do not have any hind wings while the Baetis and Centroptilum genera show very small ones.
A single short intercalar vein is located between the tip of each pair of long veins reaching the edge of the wing on the Cloeon and Procloeon genera. This short intercalar vein is doubled on the Baetis genus.
The tarsi of the hind legs have 4 articles. The first article is twice as long as the second one on the Cloeon genus, it is three times as long as the second one on the Procloeon genus.

I have photographed this Mayfly landed on the low growing vegetation near a small pond of my garden.
The lack of hind wings, the single intercalar veins and first article of the hind tarsi being twice as long as the second one indicate the Cloeon genus.
The elevated turbinate eyes indicate one male.

The relative length of the articles of the tarsi indicates again the Cloeon genus.
I think that the smaller size of the eyes, which are not clearly turbinate, indicate one female.

I have measured a size of 10 mm, plus 10 mm for the cerci.

This close-up view does not show the hind leg tarsi. So we cannot decide between the Cloeon and Procloeon genera.
