Cixius nervosus (Linnaeus, 1758)

Scientific name: Cixius nervosus (Linnaeus, 1758)
Common name:
French name:
Order: Hemiptera
Family: Cixiidae
Wingspan : 6.5 to 8.5 mm.
Biotope: Deciduous trees and shrubs, hedgerows, bushes.
Geographic area: Holarctic region, that's to say all the cold and temperate regions of the northern hemisphere.
Observation period : May to October.

Hemiptera of the Cixius and relatives such as Tachycixius genera show 3 keels on the mesonotum, wings held like a roof on the body and crossed by veins dotted with black and white.
Cixius nervosus can be recognized by the presence of a transverse white band near the base of the abdomen and two white spots at the tip of the abdomen (all this to be seen through the wings).
The postclypeus is yellowish brown and lighter coloured than the front of the head.
The black dots along the costal margin of the wings are larger than those along the veins.
There are often one or two dark cross bands close to the base of the wings.
Tachycixius pilosus shows a black dot between the veins at the apex of the wings, these dots are missing on Cixius nervosus.
Cixius cunicularius shows a broad brown cross band at 2/3 of the wing length.

Cixius nervosus
You can see the white marking through the translucent wings. The postclypeus is rather light coloured. There is no black dot between the veins at the apex of the wings nor any dark cross band at 2/3 of the wing length. All this lead to the Cixius nervosus species.
This specimen does not show any sharp dark cross band close to the base of the wings.
