The Nymphalidae of the Cissia genus are characterized by their small size. The upper side is a dull brown colour. The under side is pale brown with two broad dark brown bands. The hind wings show two large eyespots pupilled with metallic dots (2 dots inside the eyespot close to the anal angle). 15 species have been described in the Cissia genus and 5 of them are included in the list of the butterflies of French Guiana. Cissia penelope has one eyespot at the apex of the fore wings. The under side of the fore wings shows an orange patch next to the eyespot, between the last brown band and the margin. There are sometimes small metallic or bluish marks between the two large eyespots on the under side of the hind wings. Three thin brown lines are bordering the margin of the wings. Cissia myncea and Cissia maripa have a complete line of eyespots on the under side of the hind wings. Cissia lesbia shows an orange area next to the anal angle on the under side of the hind wings. Cissia terrestris has no yellow colour in the postdical area on the under side of the fore wings. |
