Scientific name: Cicadella viridis (Linnaeus, 1758) Common name: Green Leafhopper Other names: Green Cicada French name: Cicadelle verte Order: Hemiptera Family: Cicadellidae Wingspan : 7 to 9 mm. Biotope: Damp meadows and damp forests, marshes with rushes. Geographic area: Europe except extreme northern regions, Asia east to Japan. Observation period : June to October. |
Green Leafhoppers have a rounded front head. The antennae end with a long thin hair. There are two dark patches on top of the head. The pronotum is yellowish green at the front and deep green at the rear. The hind legs have spines. The elytra are green on females and vary from blue to dark brown on males. The Green leafhoppers move by long jumps and feed by sucking sap of plants. The larvae are yellowish brown with three dark grey longitudinal stripes. There are one or two broods per year. The Green Leafhopper overwinters as an egg. There is a similar , but rarer, species Cicadella lasiocarpae. I have not found many precise information on this other species except that it is mainly found on high moors and peat bogs. The observations have been done in northern and eastern Europe. |
