Chyromya sp. (Robineau-Desvoidy, 1830)

Scientific name: Chyromya sp. (Robineau-Desvoidy, 1830)
Common name:
French name:
Order: Diptera
Family: Chyromyidae
Wingspan : 3.5 to 5 mm.
Biotope: Tree hollows, rotten wood, decaying plants, bird nests and mammal burrows.
Geographic area: Flies of the Chyromyidae family are observed worldwide except in Antarctica.
Observation period :

The flies of the Chyromyidae family are very small. They are generally a whitish to pale yellow colour with shiny iridescent green red or purple eyes. The wings are translucent.
There are about 180 listed species in the world and they are classified into four genera.
The Chyromya genus is characterized by the presence of 10 to 12 setulae (short hairs) and 4 long marginal setae on the scutellum.
The other genera have a bare scutellum with 4 to 6 marginal setae.
I have only found Chyromya flava, Chyromya femorellum and Chyromya oppidana listed as present in France.
You can tell Chyromya oppidana apart with the black tip of its antennae. You cannot differentiate the two other species on picture.

Chyromya sp.
I have observed a few of these small flies in my compost bin.
The setulae are clearly visible on the scutellum (on the non-reduced picture and this could be better with a better use of the flash light). So this one is a member of the Chyromya genus.
The orange yellow antennae do not match Chyromya oppidana. So this is either Chyromya flava or Chyromya femorellum.

This second specimen shows swollen femora 1 and 3. I have found one document telling that this is a particularity of males. So the previous specimen is probably a female.
