The Neuroptera of the Chrysopidae family show hyaline spotless wings. The cross veins of the costal area are not forked. The general colour is often green and sometimes pale brown or yellow.

The longitudinal veins are bluish green, in particular the sub-costal vein. The cross veins are black, in particular those of the costal area.
The head is strongly spotted with black with a large X-shaped marking between the antennae.
The antennae are a very pale brown colour with a slightly swollen first article and a black second article.
The back of the head is marked with a broad and sharp black cross band.
Among the other species showing a large black patch between the antennae let's mention Chrysopa dorsalis which differs by a black coloured sub-costal vein, Chrysopa hungarica which differs by green coloured cross veins in the costal area and Chrysopa walkeri which does not show any black cross band at the back of the head.
The eggs are attached to vegetation at the tip of a long and thin pedicle.
Chrysopa perla and its larvae feed on aphids.

You can clearly see a broad black band at the back of the head and a X-shaped marking between the antennae.
The green colour of the sub-costal vein and the black colour of the cross veins of the costal area are better visible on the next picture. This confirms the Chrysopa perla species.
