Scientific name: Cepaea nemoralis (Linnaeus, 1758) Common name: Brown Lipped Snail French name: Escargot des bois Order: Stylommatophora Size: Shell's diameter: 25mm. Habitat : Fields, forests, small woodlands, parks and gardens. Food: Vegetarian. Reproduction : Cross-fertilizing hermaphrodite. The eggs are laid in holes in the ground. Geographic area: Europe and Eastern part of North America. |
The Brown Lipped Snail has a more or less yellowish-coloured shell. This colour is uniform or with dark bandings (maximum of 5). The lip of the shell is dark brown which makes the difference from the White Lipped Snail. It is supposed that the colour variation is linked to the habitat. It over winters by closing the shell's opening with a calcareous operculum. |

I came to the terrace on top of the garage, after a shower, to evaluate this location for bird watching. I finally had a look at more shy animals. Snails were out. |
