Habitat: Open areas with low shrubs.
Food: Seed-eating. The Common Linnet may also feed on insects in summer.
Nesting: The Common Linnet builds a cup-shaped nest in a low shrub between 0.5 and 1 meter high. The nest is sometimes directly located on the ground. There are two broods of 4 to 6 eggs, one in April and another one in June.
Migration: partially migratory. Northern populations move southwards in winter.
Geographic area: Europe, Asia except extreme south, South America.

The Common Linnet is a russet brown bird.
The wings and the tail are dark brown with white borders.
The under side is streaked with brown. The chest is pinkish. The head is grey.
Both sexes are similar outside the breeding period.
In nuptial plumage, the male's forehead and chest turn to crimson.
Males are used to perching high and singing a very pleasant song.
In winter, Common Linnets gather in groups with European Greenfinches, Chaffinches and Sparrows.

Common Linnet (Carduelis cannabina)
The road to the pond crosses a suburban zone.
On this April morning, this is quite impossible not to see the Common Linnets. This is not so common as they are very shy birds during the other periods of the year.
Several males are singing from their perch, showing their plumage now showing beautiful reddish marks.
