Cantharidae are insects with a lengthy body, rather soft elytra and long antennae of 11 articles. Cantharis livida is a yellow orange to reddish orange colour. There can be a dark triangular patch at the front of the elytra. The fore legs and middle legs are orange yellow. The hind tibias and the apical third of the hind femora are black. There is one form with black elytra: Cantharis livida var. rufipes. Adults are observed on flowers where they chase small insects. The larvae, which live on the ground and over winter, feed on snails and earthworms. |
