Scientific name: Arcyptera fusca (Pallas, 1773) Common name: Large Banded Grasshopper French name: Criquet bariolé, Arcyptère bariolée. Order: Orthoptera Family: Acrididae Wingspan : 22–35 mm for males, 29–40 mm for females. Biotope: Rocky places and dry mountain meadows, up to an altitude of 2400 metres. Geographic area: Third south-eastern part of France, Switzerland, Bavaria (on the red list of endangered species in Germany), south of Russia, Siberia. Observation period : July to September. |
The Large Banded Grasshopper is a yellowish and olive colour. It is strongly marked with yellow and black. The hind tibias are bright red and ringed with black and yellow at the base. The apex of the tegmina is blackish brown. The lateral carina on the pronotum are almost straight. Males' tegmina are as long as the abdomen, those of females are much shorter. |

With its nice yellowish colour with black markings, the Large Banded Grasshopper species is easy to identify The tegmina as long as the abdomen indicate one male. |

I have observed this Grasshopper in the mountains of Belledonne, France, at an altitude of about 1800 metres. |
