The Scarlet Peacock is a large dark brown butterfly showing a broad red median stripe on the hind wings. This stripe extends on half of the fore wings. It is then replaced by two red lines on the other half up to the costal edge. This red stripe is marked with a thin dark line on the hind wings. On the fore wings, there are generally 3 to 4 white spots next to the apex, one submarginal alignment of 4 white spots and one post median line of 5 white spots. The hind wings show 1 to 4 white spots in the submarginal area. The under side of the wings show the same pattern than the upper side but with paler colours. The black markings on the upper side are pale brown on the under side. The Scarlet Peacock is mainly active during sunny periods. This is a very common butterfly in South America. |

I have shot this picture in a garden in Rémire Montjoly. I have read that Scarlet Peacocks are very common butterflies in Guiana. So it's not surprising that this is my first new added species to my collection of photos during my first and short visit to this place. |

I have shot this picture in a garden in Rémire Montjoly. Here is one specimen with damaged wings. I have read that the black colour of the wings turns to brown on old butterflies. This picture seems to confirm this. |
