Common name: Hawthorn Shieldbug
French name: Punaise de l'aubépine, Punaise ensanglantée.
Order: Heteroptera
Family: Acanthosomatidae

Observation period : April to October. This shieldbug over winters at the adult state under dead leaves fallen on the ground.

The Hawthorn Shieldbug is a rather large shieldbug with a relatively flat body.
The pronotum is green at the front and pale brown to dark brown at the back. It is punctuated with black. It shows prominent red and black points on each lateral side. The antennae, of 5 articles, are relatively long. The four last articles are black.
The scutellum is bright green, punctuated with black and ending with a paler tip.
The corium is reddish brown along the scutellum and green along the outer edge. The membranous wing appears red or brownish.
The legs are green. The tarsi, of two articles, are reddish.
The Hawthorn Shieldbug becomes totally brown in winter.
There is a possible confusion with the shieldbugs of the Elasmostethus genus.
The points on each lateral side of the pronotum are less prominent on Elasmostethus sp. The membranous wing appears uniformly dark coloured on the Hawthorn Shieldbug while it shows very pale areas on Elasmostethus sp. The first article of the antennae of Elasmostethus sp is rather short and ends shortly after the front edge of the head, it is much longer on the Hawthorn Shieldbug.
