My preferred pictures of 2011

I have at least bought a true macro lens, the EF 100mm f/2.8L IS USM. This should improve the quality of my pictures or I will have to find other excuses.
I have not finished building the infrared barrier system and I have put this project under the carpet because of lack of time.

Red Squirrel (Sciurus vulgaris(Linnaeus, 1758)) - Yvelines, France - February 11th 2011

Red Squirrel (Sciurus vulgaris)
Canon EOS 40D, EF300mm f/4 L IS USM lens.
F/4, 1/60 s, 200 ASA. Focus distance: about 6m.
This picture is cropped.
Late winter and early spring are good periods for Red Squirrel observation and photography because deciduous trees do not have their foliage yet.

Ashy Mining-bee (Andrena cineraria(Linnaeus, 1758)) - Yvelines, France - March 26th 2011

Ashy Mining-bee (Andrena cineraria)
Canon EOS 40D, EF100mm f/2.8L Macro IS USM lens, extender tubes.
F/6.3, 1/40 s, 200 ASA. Focus distance: about 18cm.
The camera perfectly immobilized, I have used the Live view mode to focus on this insect which didn't move. So favorable conditions do not occur so often!

White Wagtail (Motacilla alba(Linnaeus, 1758)) - Texel, the Netherlands - March 31st 2011

White Wagtail (Motacilla alba)
Canon EOS 40D, EF300mm f/4 L IS USM lens.
F/5, 1/500 s, 200 ASA. Focus distance: about 4m.
What a nice surprise, after waiting the end of a shower inside my car, to see the coming of a sunny spell and of a White Wagtail.
As this last one has approached step by step, I had time to move the window down before it lands very close to me.

Checkered Beetle (Clerus mutillarius(Fabricius, 1787)) - Yvelines, France - April 20th 2011

Checkered Beetle (Clerus mutillarius)
Canon EOS 40D, EF100mm f/2.8L Macro IS USM lens.
F/6.3, 1/30 s, 400 ASA. Focus distance: about 15cm.
These Checkered Beetles being perfectly still, I have immobilized the camera against the tree stump to avoid any moving blur.

European Bee-eater (Merops apiaster(Linnaeus, 1758)) - Saône-et-Loire, France - May 1st 2011

European Bee-eater (Merops apiaster)
Canon EOS 40D, EF300mm f/4 L IS USM lens.
F/6.3, 1/1000 s, 200 ASA. Focus distance: about 6m.
This picture is slightly cropped.
It is rather easy to take pictures of European Bee-eaters.
You just need to find a nesting colony and the perches usually used in the vicinity.
However you need to take care not to disturb too much these birds during their nesting period.

(Hedychrum rutilans(Dahlbom, 1854)) - Yvelines, France - August 14th 2011
[Previous picture]    [Top]
 (Hedychrum rutilans)
Canon EOS 40D, EF100mm f/2.8L Macro IS USM lens.
F/8, 1/250 s, 400 ASA. Focus distance: about 35cm.
This picture is slightly cropped.
The species identification is not 100% sure.
